STORY

Today, I would like to pay tribute to a man and soldier named Elias Felberg who was killed in action in Normandy exactly 71 years ago.

Elias was born in 1912 in New York, 5 years before his parents, Fanie and Mathew, had immigrated from Russia.

In the early 1940s, Elias worked in a general office, but on March 27, 1941, the young man decided to join the army.

One Sunday afternoon in September 1942, he married his wife just before becoming pregnant. Elias was transferred to New Jersey and remained there during pregnancy before being shipped to Florida. He was still in that state where his son, Paul, was born. He just had time to come home once before being sent to England to be trained for the D-Day invasion.

On June 6, 1944, Elias landed on Utah Beach with the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division "Ivy".

After wading through the flooded area, the 12th Infantry came on the left of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, south of Beuzeville-au-Plain, and stayed there for the night.

On June 8, 1944, his unit was moved to Emondeville and met with strong German resistance. They fought all day, but Elias was declared killed in action.

Later, after the death of Elias, the army mailed Elias's wife some of his personal belongings, including a $ 38.33 check he had in his pocket and sterling silver identification bracelet he wore to war.

Once, he told her, "Baby, if you ever have this bracelet, you know I will not be back.

"Elias now rest in peace at Colleville-Sur-Mer American Cemetery, Lot D, Row 23, Grave 37.
