First Lieutenant Alan Ward Lowe, born 22 Oct 1921, was the son of Donald Stephen Lowe and Barbara Jeanette (Bay) Lowe of Avis, Clinton County, Pennsylvania.

Avis is 104 mi NNW of Harrisburg.
In the 1930 census 8-year-old Alan is living with his parents and sister Faye 5, on Grove Street in Avis. His father is an electrician for a steam railroad.

In the 1940 census 18-year-old Alan is living with his parents and sister Faye 15, still on Grove Street in Avis. His father is a crane operator for a steam railroad.
Alan enlisted 23 Dec 1941 in New York City. He’d had two years of college and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under semiskilled brakemen, railroad.

After pilot training he was assigned to the 350th fighter squadron of the 353rd Fighter Group flying out of RAF Metfield, Suffolk, 102 miles northeast of London. The 353rd Fighter Group was assigned to the Eighth Air Force on 7 June 1943.

The group flew P-47 Thunderbolts, and from October 1944, P-51 Mustangs, as escorts for bombing missions across occupied Europe and to strafe targets on the ground.

P-47D-5-RE 42-8683 was assigned to the 353FG/350FS at Metfield, UK. On 22-Oct-43 the aircraft, piloted by 1LT Alan W. Lowe was dispatched with other fighters from the 353FG to provide escort to a formation of B-26s from 9th Air Force. While flying at 16,000 feet the fighter formation entered a cloud formation.

It is surmised that 1LT Lowe's aircraft sustained a mid-air collision and crashed near St. Omer, France. Saint-Omer is 24 mi SE of Calais.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Pennsylvania show Lowe, Alan W, 1Lt from Clinton County as FOD (Finding of Death). An FOD was determined at least one year and one day after a soldier, sailor or airman went missing in action.
A cenotaph marker in memory of Alan was placed at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Lock Haven, Clinton County, PA.
