I recently had the honor to guide a lovely family in the footsteps of their relatives who fought and sadly paid the ultimate price in Normandy during the summer of 1944.
Sonya great-uncle, John McKnight, served in C company, 741st Tank Battalion and was killed on July 27th, 1944, while supporting the 2nd Infantry Division in the town of St. Jean des Baisants.

She was the first person from John’s family to be able to travel to Normandy to see where he served and where he rests in peace for eternity.
David’s grandfather, John E. Butcher, was a member of the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division and was tragically killed by allied bombers on July 25th, 1944 near Saint Lo.
Thanks to the help of many great friends and historians, we were able to locate the exact field where he was killed at the young age of 19. While everybody was taking in the emotion upon seeing the field, I left them for a couple of minutes.

When I returned, David gave me his phone and his mother was on the line (the daughter of John E. Butcher). It truly moved me to talk with her, knowing she didn’t grow up with her father, and the sacrifice her and her family endured for my freedom and the liberation of France.

To be able to talk with her while standing in the field that her father was killed in will be something I will never forget.

Thank you Footsteps Researchers for the help you provided with military reports.
