A son of John and Marion MACHER, Howard has two sisters and 3 brothers who will fight for their country as well. Howard is married when he enlists in the US Army in August 1943. He joins a specialized unit, that is the 786th Eng. Petroleum Dist. Co. made up on August 13, 1943 and activated on August 14, 1943.
On June 21, the supplying via pipeline must be in service. On June 23, first tanker in the harbor.
After the capture of Cherbourg, he instals a pipeline westward, following the railroad from Bayeux to Carentan. On July 9 they are in Govin but are stopped due to enemy fire. The pipeline is supposed to go through Saint Jean de Daye but this village is still under German control so the work is temporarily abandoned. Then he resumes his work on July 24 and reach Carentan. South of Govin two pipelines are build, one for the air force, the other for vehicules and which is to get linked up to the major system in Saint Lô. Howard will die of his wounds on August 13, 1944 in Caen. He is the only one of the three brothers not to make it back home. He will have participate in one of the most ingenious system of our History : PLUTO. The 786th will be awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Streamer embroidered European Theater for the period from June 9 to August 9, 1944. |
