LT. PANKOW LOST LIFE IN FRANCE

Had Been Reported Missing in Action June 14th

From Adjutant General Ulio Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pankow, of Hankinson, received the sad news that their son, 1st Lt. Conrad F. Pankow, who had previously been reported missing in action was now reported to have lost his life on the 14th of June in the service of his country in France.

Lt. Pankow went across to England early last fall, and was assigned to a heavy weapons company, handling machine guns and 81 mm. mortars.

Memorial services for 1st Lt. Pankow will be held at the Lutheran Church here in Hankinson on a date to be announced later.

Lt. Pankow was born Sept. 26, 1918 in Greendale Township and was baptized Oct. 18th, 1918, by the sainted pastor J. P. Klausler, who also confirmed him on April 9, 1933. He attended the township and grade school and thereupon enrolled in the Hankinson High School, where he was an honor student, showing special aptitude in public speaking. He represented the local school in the statewide oratorical contest, placing a very close second. He was Valedictorian of his class graduating in the year 1937.

Lt. Pankow entered Valpariso University after his graduation and later on was a student at the Univ. of North Dakota in Grand Forks and at the Univ. of Minn, at Minneapolis. From the last named school he entered the United States Army, receiving his basic training at Camp Barkley. From there he was sent to Ft. Benning, GA., where he attended the officers school and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He saw service at Camp Roberts, CA., and at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. At the latter place he was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

His untimely death is mourned by the sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Pankow, by his sisters, Linda, at present in Corpus Christi, TX., Ruth and Bernice, of this city, by his brothers. Rev. Bernard Pankow, in charge of a seminary for training native workers in Mexico City, Mexico; Fred, studying at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO., to become a Lutheran pastor, and Walter and Herbert of Hankinson.
