In memory of Irvin R. Fox Private Irvin R. Fox, serial number 35878090, Company E, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division was killed in action on August 31, 1944 during the liberation of Brest, France. Irvin was born in 1922. He worked with his father in a costume-making company "Tri-State Jobbing Co" in Cincinnati. He enlisted on October 14, 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He did his military training at Camp Wheeler Georgia. Three of Irvin's brothers also engaged during the Second World War. Staff Sergeant Harry FOX and Sergeant Leslie FOX, both stationed in Holland. The private Isadore FOX stationed in Italy. Irvin was killed at the place called Ménez Toralan in Guipavas in Finistère. It took 3 attacks between August 12 and September 2, 1944 for GI's to seize this battery which prevented their progress towards the city of Brest. The fighting was intense and took place partly in hand-to-hand combat. This hill will be nicknamed GI's "Bloddy Hill". Sergeant John J. Mc Veigh died at "Bloody Hill" and holds the Medal of Honor. Remember also all the soldiers who died during the "Bloody Hill" fights. Irvin rests at the cemetery of St James in Brittany, Plot K Row 17 Grave 9. Irvin holds the "Purple Heart".
