STORY

First Lieutenant Ralph E. LEACH, from Ashland, KENTUCKY.

He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and was later stationed at an air base in Morocco.

He sent letters home, telling his family stories of "wild surf swimming" and “big game hunting" although on one outing, he admitted, "all we shot was a squirrel."

His big brother, Lawrence, also volunteered for the Air Corps and served with the 305th Bomber Group in England, flying B-17 bombers.

They left two sisters at home, Ella and Grace, and a younger brother, Nelson, too young to serve in World War II.

They were the sons of Lawrence Leach, Sr., who worked for the Semet-Solvay Company in Ashland, and Ellie Grace (Barlow) Leach.

Both boys died in air crashes, Ralph over the Mediterranean and Lawrence over Germany.

Their remains were later found and after the war, at the request of their family, were buried side by side at the Brittany American Cemetery in France.
