STORY

Vester B. Millard was a Private in the Army during World War II. Vester resided in Putnam County, Illinois before enlisting on April 14, 1943.

At the time of enlistment, Vester was 20 years old, had a grammar school education and was single, without dependents.

One year later, Vester was captured by Nazi Germany while serving in France, and was sent to an unstated camp where 190 other American POWs were held.

Vester's capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on June 6, 1944, and the last report was made on June 9, 1944.

Based on these two reports, Vester was imprisoned for at least 3 days, one of the shorter durations of captivity recorded, the average being 363 days.

Ultimately, Vester died as a prisoner of war.
