S/Sgt Maurice L. VAN ZANDT celebrated his 23rd birthday on July 12 in Normandy and here is the last message that left his family

" I had do drive in a foxhole on my birdthay. That was the parent the Germans gave me "

History of the Battle of Saint-Malo.

Following the landing of Normandy in June 1944, the Allies entered Brittany on 31 July
On August 4 they block all access to the area of Saint-Malo.
The 83rd US Infantry Division, reinforced by the 121st Infantry Regiment (8th Infantry Division) and units temporarily attached to the Division, were responsible for the release of Saint-Malo and Dinard.
The Americans estimate that a single division can overcome Saint-Malo, whose number of defenders has been undervalued by the US 3rd Army staff.

As Britain did not have sufficient interest for Patton, a large part of the American units of Patton's 3rd Army were ordered to move eastward in an attempt to take the bulk of the German forces still in Normandy, Especially at the Falaise pocket.

So the Americans will rely heavily on aerial bombardment and artillery fire to overcome the fortification.

It was only after two infantry assaults, very murderous among the Allies, and more than eight days of shelling, that Colonel Andreas von Aulock agreed to capitulate on August 17, 1944.
