B-17F (n°42-29792) shot down over St Nazaire on May 29th 1943.
The mission 42-29792 participated in was one of 61 that the USAAF did and the 9th US bombing of St Nazaire. The objective remained the submarine pens. According to data collected from M Lugez's interview of the sole survivor, Sgt Raymond H Allaby (tail gunner), the plane was hit by AA fire at 8400m while dropping its bombs on the submarine pens. The AA fire hit the wings and front of the plane.
