Les frères NILAND ont été séparé suite aux drames des frères SULLIVAN . L'armée américaine a décidé de séparer les frères servant dans les memes unités pour éviter qu'une fratrie soit désimée. Ce navire est torpillé le 13 novembre 1942 pendant la bataille de GUADALCANAL. 687 marins dont 5 frères SULLIVAN sont décédés à son bord
