Ce 7 juin 1944, à 16h précises, 39 avions décollent de la base aérienne de Lavenham, dans le Suffolk.

Leur cible : Angers.

Les deux escadrons de bombardiers doivent pilonner la ville.

Mais la visibilité n’est pas bonne sur les bords de la Maine, la formation se rabat alors sur la gare de triage de Châteaubriant, à 60 km à l’ouest.

Sur le retour, en remontant vers l’Angleterre, une partie de l’escadrille survole Rennes où les Allemands ont installé une batterie anti-aérienne, une “flak”. Le B-24 du lieutenant Floyd Schwab est pris comme cible et reçoit un coup direct.

La forteresse volante s’enflamme et part en piqué.

Trois hommes sautent alors par l’écoutille arrière, deux sont en feu.

Quelques secondes plus tard, le Box Car se désintègre et s’écrase sur Bruz.
