Il y a des siècles une famille est née près de Courcy, un village de Normandie, en France.

Plus tard, ils ont émigré en Irlande et aux Etats-Unis, s'installant dans le Midwest.

En 1944, un jeune descendant du nom de Robert Ahern, Jr. pilotait un chasseur-bombardier P-38 de haute Wycomb, Angleterre, vers Alençon en Normandie. 

La date était le 23 Avril, six semaines avant le jour J, l'invasion alliée de l'Europe.

Robert était en mission de mitraillage, à la recherche d'assommer les défenses allemandes.

Il a fait un passage sur Alençon pour avertir les civils de son intention; sur un deuxième passage, il a été abattu et tué par des tirs anti-aériens. 

Aujourd'hui, il repose dans l'une des tombes militaires au cimetière américain de Normandie à Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

L'endroit est de 54 miles de Courcy, où sa famille a commencé. 

Robert était mon cousin, parti avant que je puisse le connaître. Le 19 mai, j'ai visité sa tombe pour la première fois.

C'est un endroit paisible, sur une falaise au-dessus d'Omaha Beach, où tant de gens sont morts en 1944 Tous les tombes face à l'ouest, vers les États-Unis.
