By the 1930 census 10 year-old Meran is living with his parents, sister Betty (14) and paternal uncle Suren at 766 North Maclay in San Fernando, Los Angeles County, California. His father in manufacturing ladies dresses. His mother manages the retail side of the family business. His father died in 1938.

Meran was class president of the 1938 class of Glendale High School. Since his father passed away in 1938, he probably worked in the family business until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps 10 Apr 1942 at Los Angeles.

Meran married Irene Gertrude Harrah Moore (Moore is her name on the Marriage License) from Yakima, Washington on 12 Apr 1943 in Maricopa County, Arizona while he was training with the 395th Bomb Group at Ephrata, Washington. Ephrata is about 75 miles northeast of Yakima in central Washington state.

2nd Lt Barsam was co pilot of B-17 42-29754 “Shangrila Lil” piloted by 2nd Lt George W Crockett, Jr., flying out of Molesworth, Cambridge. Shangrila Lil was shot down by intense flak at 16,000 feet on a mission to bomb the Special V-Weapons installation at Watten (see sketch and current pic in replies), 20 miles southeast of Calais, France. Three of the crew, including Lt Barsam, were killed by the flak direct hit near the bomb bay doors. 6 were able to bail out. Lt Crockett was able to crash-land the plane near Morbecque, 19 miles southeast of Watten, before being taken prisoner.

The Los Angeles Times – 19 Sep 1943 – Page 21 – GLENDALE AIRMAN MISSING OVERSEAS - Lieut. Meran A. Barsam, 24 year-old Glendale pilot, has been missing in the European combat area since Aug. 27, according to word received from the War Department by his mother Mrs. Hazel Barsam of 115-B W. Irene remarried Edward Roger Babcock in Yakima in 1946 and passed away in Yakima in 1991.
