Richard grew up in Plainfield NEW JERSEY, after PEARL HARBOR RICHARD like many Americans, wanted to enlist on several occasions in the army or in the navy. Richard was refused each time because of sight problem. on March 31, 1943 Richard was finally accepted into the army on April 02, 1943 Richard married Virginia Ten eyck beardsley in NEW YORK joining Fort Dix NEW JERSEY the young couple benefited little from this moment of joy because on April 7, 1943 RICHARD was due at the end of October 1944 Richard and BYRON BABB were sent to NEW YORK to be soon embarked for england. Louise BABB and Virginia CLAYBROOK followed them to NEW YORK. they lived with Virginia's parents during this time. |

Arrived on November 26th, 1944 in England, the division polishes up its training until December 24th In the daytime of the departure and the crossing towards France and Normandy. The division embarks on two ships of which the SS Leopoldville which receives 262th and 264th regiment Infantry and leaves Southampton in training(formation) accompanied with four escort ships. Arrived unless 5 miles from Cherbourg, a German submarine U-Boat 486 is in ambush and sends a torpedo to the ship. He is touched on the starboard beam before. 802 soldiers over the 2235 which he(it) transported are killed in this drama. Leopoldville is marine cemetery today. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
