STORY

Abilene Reporter-News, January 15, 1942 

"John English, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. English, 1444 North 6th, resigned his job at the circulation department of The Reporter-News and went to Dallas to enlist in the army air corps. A resident of Abilene nine months, he was born and reared in Shackelford county and was graduated at Moran high school. He planned to seek to qualify for an air corp cadet, but to enlist whether he should succeed in getting a cadet's post or not."


The Abilene Reporter-News; May 3, 1944 

"John D. English Missing on Raid -- 1st. Lt. John D. English, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess L. English, Fort Worth, formerly of Abilene, has been missing in action over France since April 20, a family friend, Mrs. Virgil M. Bradley, was informed last night. -- Lieutenant English, an Air Force navigator, was employed in the circulation department of The Abilene Reporter-News when he entered the service as an aviation cadet in January, 1942. He is a former student in Hardin-Simmons university. -- Parents of the missing officer resided at 1444 North Sixth when their son joined the Air corps. John English was a graduate of Moran high school, his family having resided there and at Albany many years." (He graduated from Moran High School on May 19, 1938.)


The Abilene Reporter-News; July 16, 1945

"Abilene Pilot Declared Dead -- First Lt. John D. English, B-17 navigator and squadron leader in the Eighth air force, has been reported killed in action over northern France on April 20, 1944, according to a telegram received from the War department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse L. English of Fort Worth. He had been reported missing in action on that date. -- Lieutenant English had been serving in the European theater since January 1944. He held the Air medal with Oak Leaf clusters and had completed at least seven raids over Berlin at the time of his death. -- Lieutenant English had been employed as assistant circulation manager on the Reporter-News when he resigned to enlist in the Army air corps in June 1942. -- A native of Albany, Lieutenant English graduated from Moran high school and completed two years at John Tarleton Agricultural college. He was attending Hardin-Simmons university in Abilene at the time he entered the service. -- Lieutenant English won his aerial navigator's wings at the Hondo Army air base on Feb. 18, 1943. His wife is now living in Houston."
