STORY

John Proudfit Eaton was also known as John P. Eaton, Jr. He was the son of John Page Eaton and Zella Alice Proudfit. He grew up in Portland, OR, where he worked as a messenger for the Southern Pacific Railroad before he was drafted into the US Army. He entered service in March 1942, and served as a radio operator.

He trained in San Luis Obispo, Needles and Camp Cook in California. He completed a course as a radio operator on Aug. 24, 1942, in Fort Knox, KY. He was shipped overseas in April 1944, and was reported missing in action on Jun. 30, 1944, in France.

After the war, records revealed that he had been injured and captured by the Germans. He died on Jul. 3, 1944, in Gerville la Foret, France, in the mayor's barn which the Germans were using as a field hospital.

He was buried in the village churchyard.

His body has never been recovered.

His name appears on the wall in the Garden of the Missing, Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

John married Nancy Jane Jones on Oct. 23, 1942, in Portland, OR. They had one daughter, Kathleen.
