The 5th Infantry Division lands on July 09, 1944 at Utah Beach Sugar Red Area. This division arrived in Normandy to replace the 1st infantry division "big red one". The 5th Infantry Division launched its first attack in the VIDOUVILLE area on July 26, 1944. Its objective is 183. This attack is part of Operation COBRA. The 2nd infantry division is on the right of the 5th. Hill 183 was protected by machine gun nests from mortars 88 mm guns among the infantry there were German paratroopers troops who were seasoned. On July 27, 1944 the 10th Infantry Regiment replaces the 9th Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division. The first battalion is in reserve behind the second battalion. The 88 mm Germans have damaged the resistance of the second battalion. The 10th Infantry Regiment helped to restore the situation. On July 30th the 10th fought all morning attacking and repelling counter-attacks with enemy artillery and infantry. the 10th infantry regiment attacked by the south route of Hill 183 At 4:00 am on July 31, 1944 the 11th infantry regiment passes through the 10th lines to storm Cote 211. In the day of July 30, 1944 the 10th infantry regiment lost 27 soldiers. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
