STORY

During its fall, Lt MELOFCHIK's B-17 collided with another bomber from the same squadron in formation, slightly lower on the left.

This is the B-17 (Nr 43-37859) piloted by 2nd Lt Robert B. SPROUL which immediately crashes north of Chartres.

No airman had time to escape from the cabin.

The bodies of Lt SPROUL and S / Sgt KOTILA were first buried in the communal cemetery of Chartres North.

Small items found on these two bodies were reunited on September 9, 1944 at Civil Affairs at 22, Boulevard de la Courtille in Chartres.

The bodies of SPROUL, BENNET, ELLINGTON, LA POINT and HINDERSCHIELD were finally buried after the war in the American military cemetery of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer.

The bodies of MOON, KOTILA, MARK and CORNWELL were transported and buried in the USA.
