STORY | |||||||
Remembering 2nd Lt John K. "Jack" Lundberg (Val Verda, Utah), an American hero who served, as a navigator, with the 534th Bomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group. Shortly after arriving in England, Jack realized that many airmen wouldn't survive the war, so on May 19, 1944, he wrote a letter addressed to his parents, in the event of his death. This letter said: "Dear Mom, Pop and family, Now that I am actually here, I see that the chances of my returning to all of you are quite slim. [...] I want you to know how much I love each of you. You mean everything to me and it is the realization of your love that gives me the courage to continue. [...] I have requested that this letter be forwarded only in the event I do not return. [...] I am sorry to add to your grief, but at all times realize that my thoughts are of you constantly, and that I feel that in some small way I am helping to bring this wasteful war to a conclusion. We of the United States have something to fight for, never more fully have I realized that. The USA is worth a sacrifice!". The following month, on June 22, 1944, Jack was on a bombing mission over Abbeville, France, when his B-17 got hit by German anti-aircraft fire. Seriously damaged, the bomber crashed killing Jack instantly. He was only 25 years old. A few weeks later, Jack's parents received his letter. This American hero is now resting in peace at the Normandy American Cemetery. By : Time To Go Home | |||||||
