STORY | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Wandering among the crosses, I come across those of the two Niland brothers, Preston and Robert (square F, row 15). Steven Spielberg made their dark story famous in his film Saving Private Ryan. But what was my surprise when I discovered Theodore Manela's name on the cross in the tomb next to them. For you, he is an illustrious unknown, but not for me. Indeed, some time ago, I discovered a v-mail written on June 10, 1944 by a resident of the city of Orange (New Jersey) to the address of her friend, Théodore Manela, a young citizen of of Filipino origin born in Orleans Parish (Louisiana). The latter joined the Army in July 1941. Assigned to the 12th Infantry Regiment, he joined Great Britain at the beginning of 1944 to participate in the invasion of Western Europe as part of Operation Overlord. As her friend guessed, Private First Class Manela landed in Normandy four days earlier with the rest of the 4th Infantry Division. Unfortunately, he will never receive the letter. Seriously injured a few days later, Ted died in a field hospital on June 14. The military administration will return the mail to its recipient weeks later with the terrible mention “Deceased”. Ted, who died at the age of 24, will be reinterred at the American military cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer in the mid-1950s alongside the Niland brothers and 9,384 other American soldiers, airmen and sailors. So if you miss it, don't forget it (square F, rank 15, grave 9) (c) Trace de Guerre, July 2022. All rights reserved. |
