On July 9, 1944, as part of his company’s advance SSgt. Louis D. Smith was attacking along a highway in Carentan, France.
The highway was subjected to heavy enemy fire, pinning Smith and his company down.
Without regard for his personal safety, Smith voluntarily left his position and crawled towards the enemy machine gun nest.
He successfully knocked out the nest by killing five of the crewmen.
Due to this, the 4thInfantry Division was able to complete the assigned mission.
Smith received the Silver Star for his actions.
Four days later, on July 13, 1944, Smith was killed in action.
