STORY

 

 Staff Sergeant Andrew Leo Jorinscay, born 14 Mar 1920, was the son of John A and Victoria F (Marchukonis) Jorinscay of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His mother was born in Lithuania.
In the 1930 census 10-year-old Andrew was living with his parents and siblings John 14, Anna 12, William 7, Dorothy 5, and James 1, at 1449 Swantek Street in Pittsburgh. His father is a machine operator at a lumber mill.
In the 1940 census 20-year-old Andrew is living with his parents and siblings William 17, Dorothy 15, and James 11, at 2213 Jane Street in Pittsburgh. His father is now the foreman at the lumber mill. Andrew is an apprentice at the lumber mill.
On his Oct 1940 draft registration Andrew was living at home at 807 DuBois Street and working at the Higgins Lumber Company.
Andrew enlisted 17 Jul 1942 in Pittsburgh. He'd had four years of high school and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under machinist apprentices. He was 5'8" and weighed 151 lbs. He was assigned to the 338th Bomb Squadron of the 96th Bomb Group. The 96th Bomb Group flew B-17s out of RAF Snetterton Heath in Norwich, 93 mi NE of London.
Andrew was tail gunner on B-17 #42-29767 "Boot Hill" piloted by 1st Lt Louis Haltom. On 17 May 1943 the 96th BG mission was to bomb the German submarine pens at Lorient.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Pennsylvania show Jorinscay, Andrew L, SSgt from Allegheny County as killed in action 17 Mar 1943. B-17 Boot Hill was shot down and crashed at Plonevez-du-Faou 47 miles NNW of Lorient. Andrew and Co-Pilot Lt George E Forslund were killed. Three of the crew were captured. The rest of the crew evaded capture. Boot Hill was the first bomber of the 96th to be shot down. A memorial was erected at the crash site.
In 1950 Andrew's parents applied for Pennsylvania Veteran's compensation and were awarded full compensation of $500.
