The Battle of Valvins, Wednesday, August 23, 1944
On August 23, around 2 pm, the first elements of the American army penetrated Fontainebleau.
It is the 11th Infantry Regiment of the 5th I.D "Red Diamond" (XXth Corps, III Army - Patton).
The retreating Germans destroyed the bridges of the Seine and secured themselves on the right bank.
Since Vulaines and Samoreau, they bombard the Americans. Thanks to the help of the young Robert TOCCHIO and the initiative of an American officer the Commander Kelley LEMMON (1912-2012) the soldiers cross the Seine in boat and establish a bridgehead on the other shore.
The next day, under the protection of U.S artillery fire and direct tank fire, a boat deck can finally be assembled on the river.
