STORY

Born on April 15, 1911 in Muncie, Indiana, Karl KORNBLUM was the son of August Kornblum and Sudie Scott.

A student of the Arsenal Technical High School of Indianapolis, he married Nina F. COHRAN on 30 June 1934 in Bartholomew.

On 11 January 1938 he entered the State Department of the Indianapolis Police at the post of Patrol Officer.

He was incorporated on 27 November 1943 in the 358th Infantry Regiment at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Early in 1944 he sailed from New-York on the M.S. John Ericsson to England, where he completed his training,

On June 8, 1944, he landed on Utah Beach and took part in the difficult operations of liberation of the Cotentin region, then of St-Hilaire-du-Harcouët and Le Mans. Within the 90th Infantry Division, the 358th proceeded to Bourg-St-Léonard to meet the Poles and the English for the closure of the Falaise pocket.

Karl Kornblum would be killed during the furious fight of the Gouffern forest, just after Argentan, on August 18, 1944.

First buried at the Gorron Provisional Cemetery, his body was transferred to the Brittany American Cemetery in St-James.

A commemorative ceremony took place on Sunday, October 15, 1944 in the Indianapolis Memorial Presbyterian Church in the presence of his widow, his father, a sister, D.G. Rogge, and a brother, Captain Henry David Kornblum, stationed at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois.
