S/Sgt. Gustav F. Schweiger, 24, veteran member of an armored infantry regiment in France and holder of the Bronze Star, has been reported missing in action since Aug. 15, accordinging to a war department telegram received yesterday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Schwieger, 1519 West Division street.
A letter written by Sgt. Schwieger on Aug. 7 revealed that he had suffered burns of the hands during an artillery barrage but did not disclose the seriousness of his injuries. Sgt. Schweiger won his Bronze Star on June 30, three days after the fall of Cherbourg and on the day American troops were breaking through the last resistance on Cap de la Hague. It was on June 30 that the Americans launched the first attacks in the direction of St. Lo., the key communications center which fell 18 days later.
Born and reared in Grand Island, he attended the public schools here and was employed at the American Crystal Sugar factory before entering the service Nov. 7, 1941.
He went overseas in August, 1943, and was stationed in England before the invasion of Normandy. Two brother, Earl and Frederick, and a sister, Mary Ann, live in Grand Island.
A half-brother, Ervin, is in Portland, Ore.
