STORY | |||||||
Bréval, crossroads of la scéllée on August 18, 1944. The jeep of the US press correspondents was run over by a tank, apparently accidentally; she was following General Patton's vehicle closely. This mysterious case is revealed here for the first time. On board were war correspondents Sonnee Gottlieb of the International New Service and Charles Shaw of the Colombia Broadcasting Company. Tom Treanor will die of his injuries.
After the crash, Treanor asked Sonnee Gottlieb of the International New Service immediately after the crash: "Did you take a picture of me under that tank? It's a hell of a thing that happens to me just before I get to Paris." But Sonnee Gottlieb was unable to take pictures - he too was seriously injured, although they both survived the crash. This Associated Press story concluded: "Wherever men revere the memory of a journalist who never lets danger, hardship or military regulations stand between him and good news, the name of Tom Treanor will be remembered." | |||||||

"Landing in Cairo just about the time Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was approaching Alexandria, Treanor went to the British to obtain an accreditation certificate as a war correspondent. But since the British didn't know him they wouldn't accredit him. Undaunted he went out and bought a set of correspondent's insignia for 70 cents, borrowed an army truck, and made a trip to the front and back before the British realized he was gone. They stripped him of his illegal insignia, but in the meantime Tom had obtained material for several 'hot' columns." Treanor was killed in France shortly after this column went to press.
