Orville was the son of William Arthur VANDERPOOL and Lizzie Cody. He married Alice Rowden and they had one son, Orville Ralph Vanderpool Jr. After Orville's death, Alice married Darrell Kirkland COFFEY. Their son, Orville Ralph Jr, was adopted by Mr. COFFEY and his last name was changed to COFFEY.
On 20th July 1942 the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment was activated and following extensive physical training the troopers moved to Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon arrival at Fort Benning, the 506th immediately started their parachute training. They learned to pack their own chutes and to prepare the equipment that was to be dropped with them. Once their advanced airborne training at Fort Benning was completed, the unit moved to Camp Mackall, North Carolina. It was here that extensive tactical training was conducted, including many night jumps.
The 506th Parachute Infantry was attached to the 101st Airborne Division on 1st June 1943 and later that month the regiment moved west to participate in the Tennessee maneuvers. After participating in these maneuvers, the 506th moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina until the end of August 1943 when the unit reported to Camp Shanks, New York to prepare for transportation overseas. The 506th crossed the Atlantic on the S.S. Samaria during September, arriving at Liverpool, England, on 15th September 1943.
In England, the unit was stationed in the villages of Aldbourne, Ramsbury, Froxfield, and Chilton-Foliat where they prepared for their first combat mission. Company I took part in various exercises in preparation for the invasion of occupied Europe and on 5th June 1944, the men of the Company I were waiting by the aircraft that were to carry them into their first combat mission in the early hours of 6th June 1944.

Tec5 Orville Ralph Vanderpool was a paratrooper from Co. I, 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, being transported on board a C-47A Skytrain (#42-100905) from the 95th Troop Carrier Squadron, 440th Troop Carrier Group, 50th Troop Carrier Wing, IX Troop Carrier Command, 9th Air Force, being flown to Drop Zone D in the early-morning hours of Jun. 6, 1944, in support of the D-Day landings.

The transport, code-named Chalk 15, was brought down by German anti-aircraft fire west of Magneville with the loss of Vanderpool, the other 17 paratroopers from his battalion and the transport's 4-man crew.

He is memorialized here with along with the other 17 paratroopers on board the transport, the transport's 4-man crew, and 6 men killed in a separate Allied bomber crash on Jun. 10, 1944.

Vanderpool was brought back the United States and to Arkansas where his family had moved. He was and laid to rest with full military honors at Coop Prairie Cemetery and three years later, the residents of Magneville erected a monument to honor the American soldiers, who traveled halfway around their world set them free. Tech Sergeant 5 Orville Ralph Vanderpool is buried near his family, but his simple headstone fails to tell the story of how a farm boy came to meet his fate in helping secure the freedom of the world. Orville R Vanderpool left behind a wife Alice, and young child Orville Jr.
