1st Lt Elizabeth Ann Raycher, WW II Army Nurse Corps

1st Lt. Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Raycher, #N-767059, Army Nurse Corps, was a World War II casualty from West Virginia.

Betty was born in Dunloup, Fayette County, West Virginia on November 26, 1921.

Her parents were John and Anna Raycher, both who were naturalized American citizens. John Raycher was a coal miner. Betty was eight years old when her father died in 1929, leaving behind a widow and three sons and three daughters. The family grieved the loss of Betty's brother, John, who died of Tuberculosis in 1936 at the age of 27.

Betty pursued a career in Nursing after high school. In the 1940 census, Betty was living in Montgomery, Fayette County, West Virginia and was a student nurse at Coal Valley Hospital. She graduated from Laird Memorial Hospital Nursing School in 1942. In March 1943, she left West Virginia for Louisville, Kentucky to train as an Army nurse at Nichols General Hospital. Prior to joining the Army she had been employed as an office nurse at Mount Hope. Betty's brother, Frank, would also enter the Army during World War II.

It is unknown when 1st Lt. Raycher was shipped overseas. It appeared that she had been assigned to the 317th Station Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany. The unit was previously assigned to Camp Atterbury, Indiana. 1st Lt. Raycher died on November 26, 1921 of a non-combat related cause. No further details nor news clippings were found.

1st Lt. Raycher was buried in Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in St. Avold, Lorraine, France. She was interred in Plot D, Row 14, Grave 38.
