On August 15, 1942 the Battalion was re-appointed as the 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion as a part of the re-appointment of the 82nd Airborne Division. During World War II, the Battalion participated in all four of the 82nd's combat jumps at Sicily, Salerno, Normandy, and Holland, as well as fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. The Battalion fought valiantly in all of these conflicts but earned special distinction during the Normandy Invasion and OPERATION MARKET GARDEN. In Holland during OPERATION MARKET GARDEN the Battalion conducted its most famous act of valor, during the Waal River Crossing. During the crossing, the 307th ferried Paratroopers across the Waal River user heavy German fire, allowing allied forces to seize a strategically important bridge and continue the allied advance towards Germany. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
