Lieutenant De CLEENE and the crew flying with him were all from 398th and went to Burtonwood to retrieve a new replacement aircraft for the one that had been lost or removed from service.

They were taking the new aircraft back to their home airfield at Nuthampstead near Royston in Hertfordshire and had taken off around 7:00 p.m.

The weather was quite good with visibility of about 2 miles and broken clouds at 3000 feet, but it was dark and there was no snow on the ground.

Around 7:25 pm, the plane was heard by local farmers flying very low.

Shortly after, it struck the west edge of Birchenough Hill near a small quarry and broke across the hill and burned.
