On November 27, 1944, Lieutenant Richard D. Connelly, 22 years old from Ottumwa, lowa, was KIA while flying a P-51D Mustang "De De Ill" coded CS-V with the 359th Fighter Group, 370th Fighter Squadron based at East Wretham, England.

After graduating from Ottumwa High School, Lt. Connelly completed his draft registration card on February 16, 1942, in Ottumwa, lowa. He was 5'11° tall, weighed 150 Ibs. with blue eyes and blonde hair. He was employed at Harper and Mcintire, a wholesale hardware business. He enlisted in the United States Army in April, 1942, in Des Moines, lowa.

Following his basic training, Lt. Connelly was transferred to the Army Air Corps. Upon graduation as a Pilot, he received his wings and commission as First Lieutenant in September 1943. While he was stationed at Waycross, Georgia, he and Miss Maxine Kern of Pensacola, Florida, were married on December 27, 1943, in
Waycross. They had one daughter.

On the day he was lost, Lt. Connelly was on a strafing mission to Ehlen, Germany. Near Hoenebach, Germany, the fighter planes in the group encountered enemy fighter planes. Lt. Connelly was in radio contact with the other fighter pilots when his plane was hit by enemy fire from a German Messerschmitt 109 fighter plane. His plane was shot down and although he was able to bail out of the plane, he did not survive. He was reported missing in action. News of his death reached his wife and newborn baby daughter in March 1945.
