| STORY | |||||||
|
Lionel a serLionel served as master sergeant on B-24G #42-78410, 763rd Bomber Squadron, 460th Bomber Group H, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during the Second World War. His squadron carried out its last mission against a target in northern Italy on 26 April 1945. On April 27, a company of American troops was trapped behind enemy lines and they were in desperate need of food and ammunition. An emergency mission to drop supplies from the air was quickly scheduled. Bud was one of the airmen who volunteered (to co-pilot) to perform the flight. Bud’s plane was on fire as he returned to the base. They had been caught in a crossfire. The plane crashed near a monastery in Matera, Italy, killing 3 airmen on board. Staff Sergeant Emswiler had completed 25 missions. He received the air medal with 2 oak leaves. |
