Fireman First-Class Arthur L Fay, born in Roxbury, MA, 17 May 1917, was the only son of Harry Andrew Fay and Edith Isabel (McNutt) Fay of Weston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Weston is on the west side of Boston 13 miles from downtown.

In the 1920 census 2-year-old Arthur is living with his parents and sister Mildred 1, at #11 Holman Street in Boston. His father is a railroad locomotive fireman.

In the 1930 census 12-year-old Arthur is living with his parents and sister Mildred 11, still at 11 Holman. His father is a carpenter for and express company (think custom crating).

Arthur married Madeline Pearl Ellery in Weston in 1939.

In the 1940 census 22-year-old Arthur and 20-year-old Pearl are living at 58 Glenville Avenue in Boston. Arthur is a truck driver for a retail auto sales company. Pearl is a stenographer for the same company. Pearl’s parents John 45, and Madeline 44, Ellery live with them.

On his Oct 1940 draft registration 58 Glenville is crossed out and 158 Kelton Street in Alston is hand-written in. Alston is south of the Charles River across from Cambridge on the near west side of Boston.

In the 1941 Boston city directory Arthur and Pearl are living at 122 Warren. Arthur is a milk delivery man.

Daughter Diane is born sometime in 1941.

Arthur enlisted in the US Naval Reserve 26 Jul 1943.

The USS Pinon (AN-66) was commissioned at the Philadelphia Naval Yard 31-Mar-44. USS Pinon (AN-66/YN-87) was an Ailanthus-class net laying ship which was assigned to protect U.S. Navy ships and harbors during World War II with her anti-submarine nets.

Arthur is listed on the original Muster Roll of the USS Pinon (AN-66) as an F1c, Fireman First-Class (also as a MoMM, Motor Machinist Mate).

After Atlantic coast shakedown and training, Pinon stood out of New York Harbor 24 June 1944 and steamed for Belfast, Northern Ireland, arriving 10 July 1944. Pinon provided net-tending service in both Belfast and Plymouth, England, through the fall.

The US WWII Navy Casualties Books for Combat Naval Casualties show Fay, Arthur Lawrence, Fireman 1c, USNR. Wife, Mrs. Madeline P Fay, 1387 Commonwealth Avenue, Alston, Boston. Since he’s listed in combat casualties he must have been killed in action while the Pinon was working out of Plymouth on the south coast of England. Since he’s buried in France the Pinon must have been doing some cross-channel work in France, possibly anti-submarine work at the Port of Cherbourg (only major port in that area).

Pearl remarried Charles Warren McCauley at Seabrook, New Hampshire, 20 Apr 1947. In the 1950 census Charles, Pearl, Diane 8, and Charles Jr 2, are living at #7 Southmere Road in Boston. Charles is a parcel delivery man for a retail department store. Pearl passed away 2 Apr 1995 at age 75. Another daughter, Norine, born in 1952, is listed in her obit. Charles died six months later on 5 Oct at age 77.
