|
His next of kin was noted as Mrs. Anna M. Flynt who resided in Elkin, North Carolina. Elbert served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17G #42-102961, 526th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He resided in Wilkes County, North Carolina prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on April 15, 1942 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents. Elbert was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, while returning from a bombing mission, crashed into the sea due to damage done by enemy flak during the war. It was noted that 4 parachutes were seen leaving the B-17. He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart. Elbert was possibly one of the airmen to parachute out of the B-17 since his remains were recovered. |
