On March 11, 1944, it was 9:00 am when aU.S.A.A.F. squadron of P47 fighters flew over the village of Saint-Rémy in the direction of Etocquigny/Boscrocourt. On the plain, they are caught in a D.C.A. fire. A few seconds later, the residents hear a huge explosion and see a large black smoke rising above Boscrocourt. Jacques CAHON, Paul DOUAY, their parents, rush through the fields towards this smoke, soon arrive behind a pasture where about ten apple trees are sectioned at ground level and in their alignment, at the bottom, the dislocated cabin of an aircraft. Heading towards him, they make a truly macabre discovery. In the grass lies the pilot’s cranial cup. Immediately, they report this horrible discovery to the chief of the fire brigade, who have already arrived on the other side of the meadow. It is Marcel DUPONT who takes care of it with respect. The pilot Harold S. Riley is registered at the civil registry of Saint-Rémy and buried in the cemetery of our commune. After the Liberation, his remains were transferred to the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer in Calvados.
