  SIMMONS John H road
Somewhere in Normandy on a road over which Allied supplies and troops still move today as the front-line fighting moves into Germany, there's a sign that carries the lettering "Simmons Road."
It serves as some consolation for a grief-stricken Pittsburgh widow and her eight-month old daughter who never saw her father, because Pvt. John H. Simmons gave his life for his country near where the sign in acknowledgement of his sacrifice stands today.
Pvt. Simmons was killed during the invasion of France in June, according to the War Department telegram received by his wife, Mrs. Alice Simmons, at their home in 7228 Race St., Homewood.
Pvt. Simmons, 29, had been in the service for 15 months and was overseas for only a few months before he met his death. It was only a few days ago that another letter from the War Department arrived for Mrs. Simmons. With the letter came the picture and the story concerning the road that had been named in honor of her heroic husband in Normandy.
The exact location of the road was not given, but the letter informed her that the signpost that stands upon it bears her husband's name because of the sacrifice he made.
