STORY | |||||||
The 94 th Bomber Group left the base of Salinas California in early 1943 to join England, This group will carry out missions from May 13, 1943 to April 21, 1945. On July 14, 1943, 87 B17 left the station 468 of Bury St Edmunds ( Suffolk ) England, Their missions, bombard the Air base 104 of Le Bourget 10 Kms from Paris. At the approach of their objective, above the city of Evreux, the German fighters which took off from the Air base 105 of Evreux ( B109 Messerchmitt ) and the ground of Beaumont le Roger ( Folk Wulf 190 ) chase the group of bombardier, and the enemy fighters immediately seek to divide the group of B17. In the B 17 SALTY’S NATURAL, it is Lieutenant Charles LICHTENBERGER who first sees the German fighters and gives the alert, he takes shots of 3 FW 190, a second series of enemy fighters engages the fight with the bomber at the head of formation, the GOOD TIME CHOLLY , the crew of the CHOLLY managed to destroy one of the fighters which exploded in flight, it managed to avoid the debris of the plane, the broken fuselage of the Folk Wulf crashes on the left wing of the SALTY’S NATURAL, the collision immediately set fire to the fuel, which causes the plane to ignite. The aircraft went into a spin, and pilot Edward PURDY briefly regained control of the aircraft long enough for Sgt Joseph CORNWALL and Sgt Francis SANTANGELO the mitters come out the door and jump by parachute, Sgt CORNWALL saw Lawrence TEMPLETON jump, Charles SPRAGUE managed to jump but his parachute does not know open. The other crew members died in the plane crash. Sgt Santangelo died shortly after jumping. Note: This reading is the account of Mike Busah nephew of Sgt SANTANGELO. |
