KIlled on an Operational Mission (KOM) on 31st July 1944 as pilot of P-47D / #42-25908 / T5-?.

Captain Yates was scheduled to lead the 10th Fighter Squadron on an escort mission. Taking off from Carentan airfield he planned to call the other members of his Squadron on R/T if he thought it advisable to continue with the mission, after checking the weather.
He took off, circled the airfield and was returning to land. On his final approach the aircraft stalled and his left wing struck te ground. The aircraft burst info flames on impact and Captain Yates was fatally injured.

Captain Yates is buried at Normandy Cemetery, H-11-25.
The nespaper clippings were very kindly supplied by Mr. Robert Blakemore of the Bowdon Area Historical Society.

In finding this photograph the USAAF Class Book Project has now found the photographs of all (21) members of the 50th Fighter Group who were KIA / MIA or died Non Battle and who are buried or commemorated on an ABMC cemetery.
