The Philadelphia entered fire support area of Giens Peninsula again at 0700 screened by the USS Mackenzie and French destroyer leader Le Malin. The Giens Peninsula and Porquerolles Island were kept under surveillance by Philadelphia planes throughout the day but no ennemy activity was observed and no targets were fired upon.[…] Shortly after 14h50 radio contact was lost with spotting n°1, Lieutenant F A Cahill pilot; plane n°2, Lieutenant Lawry pilot reported that his radioman had observed a plane crash in flames near position Lat. 43 degrees 2.4 minutes North, Long. 6 degrees 9.1 minutes East at about the time that radio contact with plane n°1 was lost.<br>Efforts were continued to make contact by radio until 1600.

Lieutenant Cahill and his plane was reported as missing to the Task Force Commander.
