 Second Lieutenant Hugh Bernard Crandall, Jr. born 23 Aug 1923, was the son of Hugh and Dorothea (Clifford) Crandall of Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
In the 1930 census 6-year-old Hugh is living with his parents, paternal uncle Neal 22, and sisters Jean 9, and Hazel 3, at 106 South Peabody Street in Port Angeles, Clallam County, Washington. His father is a deck hand on a steamboat.
In the 1940 census 16-year-old Hugh is living with his mother as head of household and sister Hazel 13, at 1663 Tenino Street in Portland. His father is working on a boat somewhere. Hugh is a service station attendant.
On his Aug 1941 draft registration 18-year-old Hugh is living at home at 1518 SE Maple in Portland. He is working at the Oregon Shipyards.
After pilot training Hugh was assigned to the 94th Fighter Squadron of the 1st Fighter Group. Assigned to Fifteenth AF flying P-38s with the primary mission of escorting bombers that attacked targets in Italy, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Rumania, Yugoslavia, and Greece. Received third DUC for covering the withdrawal of B-17's after an attack on Ploesti on 18 May 1944.

Also flew strafing and dive-bombing missions in an area from France to the Balkans. Supported the landings at Anzio in Jan 1944 and the invasion of Southern France in Aug 1944.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Oregon show Crandall, Hugh B, 2 Lt from Multnomah County as killed in action 15 Jun 1944. Ancestry says he died at Travaillan, Departement du Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. Travaillan is 74 mi NNW of Marseille.
On 16 Apr 2005 a memorial was erected at Travaillan to five American pilots who lost their lives there.
