STORY

Added December 14, 2021

The memorial states:

"This was only made possible by the sacrifice of John Chappell and Pvt. Clarence Carter who refused to fall back and covered the retreat of the other men.

They made the ultimate sacrifice but their bodies were not recovered until ten months later long after the end of the war."

In fact, three men were killed in this action: John Chappell, Joe G. Rowe, and Joseph A. Edgerly. Clarence Carter survived.

I have a fairly extensive article regarding Joesph Edgerly and this action on my website: www.insigne.org/551-Edgerly.htm

He was serving as a Browning Automatic Rifleman in B Company 551st Parachute Infantry. Hi's unit was ambushed while on patrol near the Italian border by two German machineguns which opened fire. The men sought cover in the rocks and made their escape. This was only made possible by the sacrifice of John Chappell and Pvt. Clarence Carter who refused to fall back and covered the retreat of the other men. They made the ultimate sacrifice but their bodies were not recovered until ten months later long after the end of the war.
