1940 Fletcher High School graduate. Member of the Jacksonville Beach, Florida, school's inaugural football team from 1937-1939. Enlisted in Army in 1940 and served overseas as a pioneer paratrooper in North Africa, Italy and France. Made three combat jumps, including the day of his death during the invasion of Southern France. Presumedly drowned in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Saint-Tropez after his ill-fated airborne unit was prematurely given the green jump light to bail out in dark and foggy conditions. Initially listed as missing in action. His body was never recovered. | ||||
