STORY | |||||||
Remembering 2nd Lt Nancy J. LEO (Cumberland, MARYLAND), the only woman buried at the Luxembourg American Cemetery. In 1942, after graduating from the Allegheny Hospital School of Nursing, this exceptional woman joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served with the 216th General Hospital. She then crossed the ocean and worked restlessly to treat and save American soldiers. When Nancy arrived in France (mid-June 1945), she immediately contacted her sister Angela (who was also a nurse and was stationed in Paris). The two sisters planned to reunite on July 24, 1945, but on that fateful day, Nancy was critically injured in a jeep accident. While Angela was waiting for her sister to arrive, she received a call from the Army who informed her that Nancy had suffered a severe head injury and died on the way to a Paris hospital. She was only 23 years old. Rest in peace Nancy ! |
