STORY
Second Lieutenant Harold Haddon Beanland, born 29 Nov 1922 in Fairview, Erie County, PA, was the son of Haddon Spurgeon Beanland and Bessie Irene (Rosenberg) Beanland of Erie, Erie County, PA.
In the 1930 census 7-year-old Harold is living with his parents and siblings Marjory 8, Doris 5, Raymond 4, Robert 2, and Laura 8 months, at 668 Silliman Ave., in Lawrence Park, Erie County, PA. His father is a draftsman for an electrical company. Lawrence Park is on Lake Erie just east of Erie, PA.
In the 1940 census 17-year-old Harold is living with his parents and siblings Marjory 18, Doris 15, Raymond 14, Robert 12, Laura 10, and Howard 6, at 4005 Iroquois Ave., in Lawrence Park. His father is still a draftsman.
Lt Beanland was pilot of B-24 44-50572 flying out of RAF Seething in Norfolk 109 miles northeast of London. The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Pennsylvania show Beanland, Harold H, 2 Lt from Erie County as killed in action 17 Apr 1945. Lt Beanland’s plane crashed on takeoff at Seething 17 Apr 1945.
Edward Paretti spoke on camera at the 2007 reunion of the 448th BG in Orlando, Florida. He described witnessing the incident in which four crew members, including Harold Beanland were trapped in their B-24 on the runway at Seething. Base personnel were on the scene and tried to get them out when the aircraft exploded, killing all four men. Paretti dived under a vehicle to avoid the explosion. I believe Harold Beanland had only flown one mission.
