STORY | |||||||
Edward Ribinsky joined the US Army as a private on 11 February 1944. The assignment assigned to him was the 2nd Chemical Battalion which operated 107mm M2 mortar. It was not until June 1943 that the battalion set sail to fight on the European front. Thus at the end of the month they landed in Algeria in the bay of Mers-El-Khebir, the goal being to gather before the operation Husky. The 2nd Chemical fought throughout the Sicilian campaign - where it was decorated for allowing the withdrawal of two battalions of the 15th Infantry Regiment - and much of the Italian campaign, they withdrew from the front in early July 1944 to prepare for the landing in the south of France.

It was during the month of April 1944 that Edward Ribinsky was admitted to hospital for a suspicion of malaria - which was confirmed - and concerning hearing problems. He stayed there the month, precisely when the 5th Army was in reduced activity. For Operation Dragoon the A company was attached to the 1st Airborne Task Force and the B, C, D companies to the 143rd and 141st Infantry Regiments of the 36th Infantry Division.
10 days after the landing while the allied forces continued their advance towards the north, the 2nd Chemical helped to secure the right flank of the 7th Army in the Alps. On 27 August the battailon was used as infantry to defend the PC of the Colonel of LAUTARET. They re-established themselves on the heights and finally stopped the counterattack.
