Stephen entered active service with the 36th Infantry Division, 143rd Infantry Regiment, Company K.
Stephen received the Silver Star by General Order No. 399 (1944) for great bravery in combat against the enemy.
He is buried at the Rhone American Cemetery, in Draguignan, in the South of France.
