On the morning of June 24, 1944, early on, the B-24 of the 93rd BG took off from their base in England for a bombing mission. The aim was the airfield of Dreux. The bomber training without difficulty crossed the Channel and then took to the direction of Dreux. Among the equipment of the 328th BS, found the B-24 J (Nr 42-100294, pin up "Victory Bell") flown by Captain Roggenkamp and carrying 10 crew. Around 8:40, the training came near Dreux and the goal was in sight. That's when the action began DCA forming a real anti-aircraft barrage. The bombers opened their bunkers preparing to drop their bombs when all of a sudden, the B-24 Captain Roggenkamp was hit hard at its bunkers still filled with bombs and engine # 2. Three airmen located in bombers of the same training could observe the terrible accident: The device caught fire and immediately, the crew began to jettison his bombs to release the emergency exit and attempt a possible forced landing, he quickly lost altitude leaving training then turned to the right. The pilot and co-pilot remained in control of their aircraft to allow their friend to evacuate the aircraft and emergency parachute. The bomber could not go further and outdoor exploded with another 4 men inside. The B-24 bomber crashed in the southwest above its target, before being unable to drop his bombs. 7 airmen have time to parachute but the penny has no luck because of debris from the explosion fell on his parachute and inflamed.
