Remembering Pvt Frank J. Surek and PFC Joseph D. Surek, two brothers from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Like most brothers, Frank and Joseph shared a very special bond, and could always count on each other. During WWII, they both joined the U.S. Army, and both fought for our freedom in Europe. Frank was member of the 36th Engineer Combat Regiment, while his little brother Joseph served his country with the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. On February 16, 1944, Frank was fighting in Anzio, Italy, when his comrades saw him fall to the ground. Severely wounded by enemy fire, he was taken to a medical aid station, but died the following day, at the age of 25. Five months later, on July 13, 1944, Joseph was confronting German forces in Saint-Lô, Normandy. While cautiously advancing, he tried to see any unusual shape and hear any suspicious sound. Danger was everywhere, and the enemy could be anywhere. Suddenly, the bullet of a German sniper hidden in a church steeple struck Joseph's head, killing him instantly. He was only 22 years old. Frank and Joseph are now resting in peace, side by side, at the Normandy American Cemetery. |
