STORY | |||||||
Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia |
Dell was a member of the Army Air Corp 382nd Fighter Squadron, 363rd Fighter Group. His service began on August 13, 1941, and he was sent overseas in March 1944. After training on a P-39, he later flew a P-51. On August 13, a flight of eight planes from the group dispersed a formation of twenty-five German dive bombers, earning eight victories. Lieutenant HUDSON died in the crash of his plane on August 13, 1944 above the Chambois pocket. His body has never been found. The drama was tied in the last days of the Battle of Normandy, perhaps the most terrible, when the allies tried to reduce the pocket of Chambois. On August 13, 1944, two US Air Force fighter planes piloted by Second Lt Chester H RICE and First Lt Dell P HUDSON flew over the area to track the encircled German columns. | ||||||
After the strafing, one of the two fighters turns around. Undoubtedly blinded by the sun, the pilot did not see the other aircraft arriving in front. Collision is inevitable. The two pilots gave up their lives there. Second Lieutenant Chester Hugh RICE is buried in Frederick Memorial Cemetery in Tillman County, OKLAHOMA. |
